About the Coffee

The Sidamo region in Ethiopia is renowned for its ideal conditions for growing Arabica coffee, thanks to its unique combination of soil, climate, altitude, rainfall, and temperature. This region specializes in what is known as "garden coffee," a method of coffee cultivation that is deeply integrated into the small village communities, or kebeles, where it is practiced. These coffee gardens are characterized by their low-density planting, typically between 1000 and 1800 trees per hectare, which allows for more sustainable growth and easier maintenance.

A significant aspect of Sidamo's coffee production is its reliance on organic matter for fertilization, adhering to agronomically organic practices. This method not only supports the health of the soil and ecosystem but also enhances the coffee's quality and flavor profile. Despite the organic practices prevalent in Sidamo, it's important to note that not all coffee from this region is officially certified as organic. The certification process involves rigorous standards and procedures, and while many farmers adhere to organic practices, financial and bureaucratic barriers can prevent them from obtaining official certification.

The emphasis on organic farming practices in Sidamo, coupled with the region's optimal growing conditions, contributes to the production of specialty-grade coffee that is highly valued on the global market. Sidamo's coffee is celebrated for its unique flavors, often described as floral and citrusy with a bright acidity, making it a favorite among coffee enthusiasts worldwide.
