UGANDA RWENZORI WASHED
The Rwenzori Mountain range in Uganda is emerging as a significant source of high-quality green coffee, benefiting from a variety of new washing stations across the mountain range. These stations facilitate the collection of coffee cherries, which are then transported to a centralized wet mill for processing. This infrastructure not only ensures meticulous quality control but also allows for the production of both natural and fully washed Ugandan green coffee.
Traditionally known for producing naturals, the introduction of new washing stations in the Rwenzoris has expanded the capacity to produce fully washed coffee as well. Grown at altitudes ranging from 1300 to 1900 meters above sea level, this coffee is sourced directly from local farmers through the receiving stations. These farmers receive compensation that is significantly higher than the standard rates for "drugars" — the term used for dried Ugandan Arabica beans, which historically have been of inconsistent and often poor quality. This change represents a shift towards higher quality and more reliable coffee production, which, in turn, provides the farmers with a better income.
The receiving stations have been instrumental in enabling the delivery and processing of high-quality coffee lots. This system not only improves the standard of natural and washed Ugandan green coffee but also opens up opportunities for experimenting with micro-lots. The transformation in the Rwenzori Mountain range's coffee production highlights a move towards sustainability, quality, and economic improvement for the local farming communities, setting a new precedent for coffee production in Uganda.
